The City of Knoxville will be paying more than $60,000 in damages after a Holston Middle School student was shown pictures of her father following a fatal drunk driving crash.

Maria Higginbotham sued the city, along with Knox County and the Knox County Board of Education.

In 2005, her daughter saw graphic photos of her biological father during a drunk driving awareness program.

A Knoxville police officer asked if anyone knew William Lynn Cabbage before showing the photos of the dead drunk driver to the seventh grade class.

Higginbotham says her daughter hadn’t seen her father since she was about four years old and only knew him as “Daddy Lynn.”

Monday afternoon, Judge Dale Workman dismissed Knox County as a defendant in the case.

However, Workman ruled the city must pay $50,000 in damages to Higginbotham, and cover slightly more than $16,000 for her daughter’s medical expenses.

Higginbotham testified that the girl still suffers from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder from seeing the graphic photos.
